The late 1960s was rife with political and social unrest, and the concert venue provided an excellent forum for the voices of protest and change. This benefit for the Guardian, a radical New York publication in-synch the prevailing viewpoint, featured an unbelievable line-up of contemporary icons from Herbert Marcuse, the 'father of the New Left,' and Bernadine Dohrn, the young attorney who arranged for legal help for the Columbia University protesters, to activist H. Rap Brown. Pete Seeger, a pacifist from birth associated with many of the era's premier protest functions, was especially at home at the Fillmore East, Bill Graham's venue that took seriously its commitment to serve and reflect the locals.
